Tamara John, M.D. is an Ivy-League trained, board certified Orthopaedic hand and upper extremity surgeon. Dr. John specializes in the surgical and non-surgical treatment of common hand/upper extremity conditions involving the fingers, hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, and humerus. She is fellowship trained in orthopaedic hand and upper extremity surgery in addition to microvascular and soft tissue rearrangement. Her ultimate goal is for her patients to feel heard and comforted while striving to regain their function.
Dr. John was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and raised in Rochester, N.Y. by Caribbean parents. She grew up as a student-athlete competing in tennis tournaments nationally. Through her experiences in both academics and tennis, she developed a passion for academic excellence, mentorship, leadership, and teamwork.
Dr. John completed her undergraduate studies at Cornell University, playing Division I varsity tennis while majoring in biological sciences and minoring in neurobehavioral sciences. She then returned to her hometown to complete medical school at the University of Rochester. During her orthopaedic surgical residency at Yale University, she became extremely interested in the art of hand and upper extremity surgery. Dr. John then completed her fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. She is honored to have trained at institutions that not only prepared her to care for complex surgical and non-surgical upper extremity conditions, but most importantly, saw value in genuinely listening to patients, and working collaboratively with patients in order to determine their most appropriate treatment plan.
Dr. John previously practiced in Atlanta, Georgia where she was regarded as one of the top hand surgeons in the area. She then transitioned to Tamarac, Florida where she started her own Upper Extremity practice. She is not only known for her surgical abilities especially in complex upper extremity cases, but she is also known for her compassion and dedication to her patients. Dr. John has trained at esteemed academic institutions and remains updated on current research and current concepts in orthopaedic surgery.
In her spare time, Dr. John still loves to play tennis and stays active in the gym. She also enjoys mentoring high school, undergraduate, and medical students, as well as residents and fellows, who are looking for guidance and preparation in their respective fields of interest.
Dr. John thoroughly enjoys caring for her patients. Her unique skillset has truly allowed her to improve the lives of so many individuals in need. This is what continues to fuel her passion for excellence—her patients.
